Catalyst – Rick McKinley and Donald Miller – Engaging our Culture
Posted by BrentD on August 13, 2007
I heard this message last year at Catalyst, and it is still stirring in me today. It is a great Missional message. This is an interview with Rick Mckinley by Donald Miller at Catalyst 2006. Check out the line-up for this years Catalyst at: www.catalystconference.com
doneWith all our church programs and ways to build a Church, I like the way that Rick and his congregation went about it. They actually took time to examine their hearts WHY and HOW to affect their community in Portland, OR. A few things I grabbed from the message I liked:
- We say we want to touch people in our community, but often times the truth is we don’t like to hang around people that are not like us
- They gathered for a time and repentance – not about what they were doing, but about what they were not doing – Author note - how often do we repent for what we don’t do?
- Making Relationships without an agenda
- Once they left the doors of the Church, they realized that God was in the streets. Believers hearts were being transformed because they were engaging God; they were being transformed because they were doing what is closest to the heart of God.
- Faith shows up in Risks! – Author note – Be Lion Chaser!
- Give your people permission to do what God is stirring in them and to be Missional
- Philosphy : The identity is that we are a sent people of God and the Church exists for the world and not ourselves.
- Create a culture that does….
- We strengthen the things we like through programs, and ignore and let die what we don’t like. It’s a Darwinist view. We need to be looking at helping the broken….
- We’ve protected the Gospel instead of proclaiming it
- When you protect yourself from the culture you lose your voice…
- when engaging your City/community we need to care about what they care about…
- The reality the Church is the hope for the world, and when the church is on MISSION there is nothing more transformational for the world…..
